When fighting for climate justice, we think of the larger community and women at large, Save Lamu brought together different stakeholders within the County as we initiated Voices for Just Climate Action, women in most cases have always been given less priorities when it comes to fighting for their rights, Save Lamu on the other hand side has been doing a lot of advocates to the Lamu Community and creating awareness both national and international levels. Save Lamu launched Voices for Just Climate Action program aimed to promote women advocacy work for them to be able to raise their voices against climate justice and violence.

As the world is turning away from fossil fuel projects, as Save Lamu we have been on the move since the inception of the Lamu port and with the recent idea of having coal project in Lamu advocating for alternative sources of generating power, we aim to educate the Lamu community and most especially women to be our ambassadors back in their respective areas and advocate for renewable sources of generating energy.

“Women in Lamu are now educated, we know our rights, we want a better tomorrow for our kids” said one of the women present during the launching of VCA project that took place in Lamu at the Lamu Polytechnic Hall on the 5th of November 2021. She however added by saying that we are living in a new era whereby women voices maters.

Women have always been given less priority when it comes to matters to do with community and most especially when it came to decision making

On 13th November 2019 the African Development Bank announced that they will not fund a coal fired plant project in Kenya and has no intention to finance new coal power plant, due to a lot of environmental destructions that will be caused as a result of coal plant

One year later in 2020, Industrial Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) made announcements not to finance the 1,050MW Lamu coal plant project, the announcement came in as a break through as we were facing opposition from a certain number of groups who tagged us as anti-development because of the firm stand we have, in advocating for climate justice.

Again a year later, on the 21st September 2021, Chinese president Xi Jinping during the United Nations General Assembly debate, announced that china will direct its focus on supporting low-carbon energy in developing Countries and would not build any new coal fired power plants.
