About us
In 2009, Lamu Environmental Protection and Conservation (LEPAC) spearheaded an initiative to unite groups and individuals in a campaign to save the Lamu Archipelago. Out of this initiative, a coalition of groups came together under the banner Save Lamu. The coalition includes community members from a variety of local and national organizations. Save Lamu was born out of the BCP coordinating committee made up of representatives from affiliated groups and members of the indigenous communities in Lamu District who were working to develop a Bio-cultural Community Protocol (BCP).
Bio-cultural Community Protocol (BCP)
A BCP is as an instrument that documents community practices, rights over communally managed lands and traditional knowledge. Outside of advocacy and raising awareness on the Lamu port, Save Lamu will maintain the development of the BCP as key project which can serve a multipurpose function in education and advocacy in the future.
Other BCP members include:
- Boni Self-Help Group
- Development Policy Management Forum (DPMF)
- Faza Youth Action Group
- Human Rights Network (HURINET)
- Imams of Lamu
